东莞理工学院是东莞第一所普通本科院校，省市共建，以市为主，诺贝尔物理学奖获得者杨振宁博士任名誉校长。学校于1990年筹办，1992年4月经原国家教委批准成立，2002年3月经教育部批准变更为本科全日制普通高等院校，2006年5月获批为学士学位授予单位，2008年5月提前参加教育部本科教学工作水平评估并以良好成绩通过，2010年6月与清华大学等61所高校一起被批准为教育部第一批“卓越工程师教育培养计划”实施高校，2015年9月被确定为广东省重点支持的高水平理工科大学建设单位，2018年5月被确定为新增硕士学位授予单位。2018年11月，学校大学科技园入选“国家大学科技园培育单位”，2019年7月成为全省唯一省市共建新型高水平理工科大学示范校。2020年成功入选首批国家知识产权试点高校名单。筹集社会捐赠教育发展资金6.5亿多元（包括现金和实物）。
现有松山湖、莞城两个校区，其中松山湖校区坐落在松山湖高新技术产业开发区大学路1号，占地1800多亩（含370亩国际合作创新区）；莞城校区坐落在莞城区学院路251号，占地330多亩。教职工1742人，其中正高职称人员173人、副高职称人员373人，博士750多人。有普通全日制学生近2万人，继续教育学生近2.1万人，迄今为地方培养各类人才约11.5万人，80%左右的毕业生留莞就业创业，累计向社会开展培训约12万人次。
图书馆总建筑面积45020平方米，累计藏书201万册，有130个数据库、172万册电子图书等数字资源。建成万兆带宽主干、两条40G主干，基本实现千兆带宽到桌面的IPV6校园网，3.8万个信息点，建成覆盖全校的无线校园网，AP数量6600多个，出口带宽96.5G，服务信息化系统丰富、方便、快捷。
建有17个实验教学中心，其中10个省级实验教学示范中心。建立了以工学为重点，管理学、文学、理学、经济学、法学、教育学等多学科协调发展的学科专业体系。设有18个学院、55个本科专业，其中通信工程、软件工程、社会工作3个专业入选首批国家级一流专业建设，电子信息工程等12个专业入选广东省一流专业建设点。面向全国28个省（市、自治区、特别行政区）招生，在14个省（市、自治区）部分专业第一批本科招生。
Dongguan University of Technology (DGUT) is the first full-time Ordinary University to have been established in Dongguan. It is a matter of great pride for the University to have Dr. Chenning Yang, a Nobel Laureate in Physics, as our Honorary President. Construction of DGUT began in 1990 and it was operational in April 1992. Functioning under the purview of the Ministry of Education, DGUT was approved as a full-time regular university in March 2002 and began granting Bachelor’s degrees in May 2006. In May 2008, participated in the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education in advance and passed with good results. In June 2010, DGUT was included in the initial list of 61 institutions to be supported by the national “Outstanding Engineers Cultivation Project”, which included the world-renowned Tsinghua University.In September 2015, DGUT was identified as a high-level university of science and engineering construction unit with key support from Guangdong Province. In May 2018, DGUT was identified as an additional master's degree granting unit. In November 2018, the University Science and Technology Park of the school was selected as the "National University Science and Technology Park Cultivation Unit". In July 2019, DGUT became the only province and city in the province to jointly build a new high-level science and engineering university demonstration school. In 2020, DGUT was successfully selected into the list of the first batch of national IP pilot universities. DGUT raised more than 650 million yuan (including cash and in kind) donated by the society for educational development.
DGUT has two campuses at present: Songshan Lake Campus and Guancheng Campus (Downtown). Songshan Lake Campus is located at the beautiful, Songshan Lake High-tech Park, and has an area of more than 1800 mu (including 370 acres of international cooperation and innovation zone).The Guancheng campus is located at No. 251 Xueyuan Road, Guancheng District, covering an area of more than 330 acres. There are 1742 faculty members, including 173 persons with senior titles, 373 persons with deputy senior titles, and more than 750 doctors. There are nearly 20,000 ordinary full-time students and nearly 21,000 continuing education students.DGUT has trained about 115,000 local talents of various types so far, and about 80% of the graduates have stayed in Dongguan for employment and entrepreneurship, and a total of 120,000 have been trained to the society.
Libraries cover a total built-up area of 45,020 m2, and have a collection of 2.01 million books, 180 databases and 1.7 million e-books. DGUT built a 10G bandwidth backbone and two 40G backbones, basically realized the IPV6 campus network with gigabit bandwidth to the desktop, 38,000 information points, and built a wireless campus network covering the whole school. The number of APs is more than 6,600, and the export bandwidth is 96.5G. The information system is rich, convenient and fast.
There are 17 experimental teaching centers, including 10 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. Established a discipline and professional system focusing on engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as management, literature, science, economics, law, and pedagogy. There are 18 colleges and 55 undergraduate majors. Among them, communication engineering, software engineering, and social work are selected as the first batch of national first-class majors, and 12 majors including electronic information engineering are selected as first-class majors in Guangdong Province. It recruits students from 28 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions, and special administrative regions) across the country, and recruits the first batch of undergraduate students in some majors in 14 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions).
