North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) is accountable to the Ministry of Emergency Management. Based on the work of its predecessor, Beijing Coal Management Institute (set up by the former Ministry of Coal Industry in 1984), beginning cadre education and training, and it was reorganized as North China Mining College in 1993. By the year of 2002, another milestone was reached in the development of the college—an upgrading to an undergraduate institute, which was renamed as North China Institute of Science and Technology. In the year of 2011, NCIST was qualified to admit postgraduate students in the field of engineering (Safety Engineering). 

NCIST is located in Yanjiao, the National-level High-Technology Industrial Development Zone, adjacent to Beijing Sub Center. NCIST covers a total area of 800 mu, and has a further building area of 450,000㎡. NCIST has a National Engineering Practice Education Center, 6 Ministerial Key Laboratories, 10 Provincial Key Laboratories, Academician workstation, Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center and Educational innovation Highland. The NCIST library has a large collection of 1,400,000 books and 1,670,000 of digital books, together with 37 databases. Modern teaching technology is so widely applied in NCIST that it serves as a network base for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).

NCIST has 14 schools and 2 departments. Over 16,600 full-time students are currently attending various academic or vocational courses at the institute. It offers 54 undergraduate programs, covering eight disciplinary fields: engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, management, education and arts, etc. Currently, NCIST has 5 national characteristic specialty, high-quality course, 3 pilot programs of Ministry of Education “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program”, 7 provincial key subjects, key developing subjects and Brand Specialty.

NCIST has an excellent faculty team comprised of 1000 members in total. Of all the professional teachers, about 90% hold master or doctoral degrees and nearly 50% are professors or associate professors. Furthermore, NCIST also has 6 academicians (external) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 foreign academician. 5 are entitled to a special government allowance. The State Candidate of Millions of Talents Project in the New Century has 3. 6 belongs to Program by Supported for New Century Excellent Talents in Ministry of Education. There are 8 national production safety emergency experts, 4 provincial famous teachers, excellent educators and excellent teachers.

NCIST has powerful scientific research strength. In the recent 5 years, more than 1000 scientific research projects have been set up, among which there are 3 National Key Research and Development Projects and 28 National Natural Science Foundation of China. The total amount of funds received is nearly 300 million yuan. NCIST has won 80 science and technology achievement awards that exceed provincial and ministerial standards. The teachers have published more than 2000 academic papers, of which more than 300 are included in three major searches. Furthermore, teachers have obtained more than 70 invention patents and published more than 40 monographs.

NCIST maintains a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with the International Labor Organization and European Commission; meanwhile, joint education programs have been started with higher learning institutions and research institutes from America, UK, Italy and Latvia to cultivate professionals. One Belt One Road Initiative China-Latvia Center for Academic Exchange is set up at NCIST. Presently, more than 40 long-term foreign experts and teachers are employed by the institute. Moreover, the current enrollment of international students is about 50.

The Office of International Cooperative specializes in international students’ admission and daily service, offering a large range of language training programs to international students to be in accordance with different interests and needs. NCIST encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities related to Chinese folklore to experience Chinese culture further.
