Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It is the top 3 university in Chinese mainland and ranks No.34th in the QS world university rankings of 2023.
The two characters, fù (“return”) and dàn (“dawn”) were borrowed from A Commentary on The Classic of History （《尚书大传·虞夏传》）, of which the part on the Yu and the Xia dynasties mentions: “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning radiance returns at dawn.” In 1917, the institution was renamed Fudan University, which has been kept ever since.
Fudan has 35 schools and departments with 18 affiliated hospitals, which offer 69 bachelor degree programs, more than 90 doctoral degree programs and about 130 master degree programs to students across the world. Meanwhile, Fudan has 77 research institutes, 112 interdisciplinary research institutes, 5 State Key Laboratories, and 80 ministry level research platforms that can provide top research sources and platforms for teachers and students. Currently, there are approximately 50000 students, 3602 teaching and research scholars, 59 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in the university.
As a national key university in China, Fudan University has a history of more than 100 years, and it has developed into a comprehensive research university including 12 discipline categories, which are literature, philosophy, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, management sciences, economics, medicine, art and interdisciplinary. 40 disciplines become nation key ones (Level I and Level Ⅱ), 11 of them belongs to the Level I, which are very competitive in the nation.
Moreover, there are 21 disciplines ranks in the ESI 1% in the world, including: Computer Science, Biology & Biochemistry, Environment/Ecology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Social Sciences (general), Economics & Business, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, Agricultural Sciences, Plant & Animal Science, Immunology, Neuroscience & Behavior, Psychiatry / Psychology, Multidisciplinary. Material Science, Clinical Medicine, Chemistry and Pharmacology & Toxicology has even being the top 1‰ of the world.
Besides, Fudan is one of the first few institutions in China to admit international students, which accepts about 7000 international students from more than 130 countries each year. To overcome language barriers to reach students, Fudan developed over 40 English-instructed programs for both undergraduate and graduate candidates. What’s more, Fudan accept Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS), International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship and China Studies Program Ph.D Fellowship.
In terms of the national cooperation, Fudan has cooperative programs with over 250 universities and institutes in close to 50 countries and regions. At the moment, Fudan University offers student exchange opportunities to over 200 partners such as The University of Chicago, University of Toronto, The University of Sydney, Science Po, UCLA, Humboldt University and etc. Every year, over 3000 students travel overseas to gain their first-hand experience.
Also, Fudan has many dual degree programs with world famous universities like LSE, London Business School, Science-Po, University of Groningen, Lund University, Waseda University.

The International Students Dormitory of Fudan University on Handan campus is located in the north area (No. 57 Wudong Road, Shanghai, China). It is constituted by the main building, supplementary building and Asian Youth Center-accommodation center. It can accommodate up to 1530 international students.
Main Building:
The main building located northwest of Fudan campus is a 23 storey building with totally 728 rooms, 582 single rooms and 146 double rooms respectively. There are 5 elevators in the main building (in the middle of north and south lobbies). The north lobby of the main building includes the reading area and cafe bar. The 24 hours reception desk and the mail boxes are in the south lobby of the main building. Each floor is equipped with 2 kitchens which provide hot water (non-potable water) at both ends of corridor. All the rooms in the main building are equipped with balconies, air-conditioner, private bathroom, internet access (you should buy card to use it). Please note: The beds come with no beddings.
Supplementary Building:
All the 8 units of the supplementary building have altogether 448 single rooms. Each unit is a 7 storey unit. Each floor has two apartments. Each apartment has 4 single rooms, sitting room and bathrooms. Each of the single rooms have balconies, air-conditioner, internet access (you should buy card to use it). There is a laundry room located in the supplementary building, Unit 4, and there are washing machines in Unit 2 and Unit5. Please note: The beds come with no beddings.Students who chose to move on the units of the supplementary building need to take the stairs since there are no elevators installed.
Asian Youth Center-accommodation center (AYC for short):
Through investment of member of the Fudan school board Mr. Cao Qiyong, the Asian Youth Center was constructed with the aim of promoting mutual understanding and friendly interaction between Asian students, and to nurture the Asian leaders of tomorrow. It contains the accommodation center and the activity center. The accommodation center provides accommodation for both international students from Asian and Chinese students.
AYC has 4 units including 224 single rooms. Each unit is a 7 storey unit. Each floor has two apartments. Each apartment has 4 single rooms, 1 sitting room and 2 bathrooms. Each of the single rooms have balconies, air-conditioner, internet access (you should buy card to use it). There are washing machines in Unit 2 and Unit 3 of AYC.
AYC doesn't support on-line booking. Announcement of application is issued every semester. Students apply independently and can move in after the school's approval.
