Housing

On-campus Accommodation

The International Student Apartments of Harbin Institute of Technology provide double room to the international students: two beds in one room and bathroom, RMB 600/month/person. Included in each room are bedclothes, Internet access and furniture.

Because the number of on-campus apartment rooms is limited and cannot meet the demands of all students to live on campus, the new students who have received the Admission Notice of Harbin Institute of Technology need to book the rooms in advance.

When you check in at the General Service Desk of the dormitories, please show your Admission Notice, passport and four photos. According to the relevant policy, the International Student Apartments are only able to host international students who are registered in Harbin Institute of Technology. Neither the relatives or friends of students nor other persons are allowed to live in the apartments. Students living in the Apartments should comply with the administrative regulations. For instance, lighting fire, including using candles is strictly prohibited in the rooms; students are not allowed to host other people overnight in the rooms.

Living off-campus

You may need to ask some help from your Chinese Buddy or friends in Harbin. Please be careful when signing the contract or lease, since there may be hidden clauses.

When you live off campus, never forget to get a Registration Form of Temporary Residence issued by the local police station of your accommodation.  Within 24 hours after you move in, please bring your passport and go to the local police station together with your landlord (or other authorized agency).

The Registration Form of Temporary Residence is another important certificate for your legal stay in China, aside from your passport and visa. Please keep it along with your passport. It is required for your application of new visa, visa extension, additional entry or residence permit.

Therefore, a special reminder is that before you sign for the contract or pay for the rental, do confirm that the owner of the apartment/house property is able to process the accommodation registration for you. Otherwise you will get into trouble of illegal stay. Moreover, you need to renew your Registration Form of Temporary Residence if you have moved to another place, changed your passport or renewed your visa.

Ali Hasan Mumtaz

Ali Hasan Mumtaz, a Ph.D. candidate from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in the School of Business Management comes from Pakistan with many dreams and ambitions. He is currently the International Student Representative at HIT and is actively participating in connecting with new and old students and helping them with issues. He pursued his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at Harbin Institute of Technology and focused on Chemical Engineering, as his love for innovation in chemical industries pushed him in that direction. At the same time, he is very fond of business and decided to choose Leadership and Organizational Behavior in his Ph.D.

The Journey from Pakistan to China

Leaving his family back in Pakistan and starting afresh was quite challenging for Ali in the beginning, but coming to China was a different experience for him. One of the biggest pulls to China was the famous Sino-Pak friendship that people have sung about over many years. He was very concerned about the language, and the culture, but coming to China gave him a new perspective about life, and how it will be shaping the future. Ali has spent time in various countries before coming to China, and his fascination with Chinese culture attracted him.

A University of Many Dreams

When Ali came to HIT, he saw a dream, an aim that he had with his future. Starting his bachelor’s in HIT, he was bombarded with opportunities that allowed him to learn and understand the basics of chemical engineering relatively quickly, then his love for his project and his motivation from the professor, Ali chose Chemical engineering in Masters as well. HIT has been a part of Ali’s life which had influenced him in many ways, making him a better person, and when it comes to cultural exposure to China, Ali always asked HIT to allow him to understand the Chinese traditions well, and participated in many events that allowed him to learn about it.

An Adventure Begins @HIT

Being at HIT, Ali was enabled in participating in many activities, and organizational events, such as Model United Nations, or Orientation Planning for new students.

“There is no activity that I missed, no event that went without participation, I made sure that my years in college were full of education and unforgettable experience.” His first step in HIT started with a small debate competition, that placed a foundation for his growing confidence in himself. And after that Ali aimed to boost it by participating and organizing many different types of activities. One of the most important things that Ali found was his everlasting friendships and bonds. He made friends that will last a lifetime and created memories that whenever talked about, will bring smiles. His passion for music brought him across many talented musicians around HIT, and they formed a band named “Harmony International”, which was one of the first foreign student bands, that performed on various stages in HIT. His continuous efforts in studies and his dedication towards his work, granted him the “Outstanding Student Award” by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC).

Then later was awarded the Outstanding Graduate award during his bachelor’s graduation. Ali was one of the lucky students who was offered a full scholarship from HIT to continue his Ph.D. studies. HIT offered many different opportunities that allowed Ali to gain many different kinds of experiences towards enhancing his educational and academic knowledge.

World to Explore from HIT

HIT is one of the most renowned universities in China, famous for its innovation and technological advancements. HIT has been at the forefront of astronautical research with top-class facilities built within the campus. HIT is connecting the world and bringing Chinese universities closer to international academic research. The great foundation is presenting in the HIT Space Museum that is built inside the HIT campus.

Its technological advancements and cutting-edge designs have given HIT a stepping stone to reach out internationally and allow its students to learn both, domestically and internationally.

When in HIT, Ali was already fond of traveling and learning about many other countries. HIT became a foreground for Ali, which enabled him to connect with different parts of China and the world.

They informed him about funded competitions and opportunities that took place in HIT, and Ali was already fond of International Debate competitions. “Debating gave me the adrenaline boost and that plan to look for the next event, so it was always interesting to know that there is always another event that will help me improve”. Seeing his attitude, HIT decided to fund his trip to the competition at ICISTS, KAIST for a health care project, in which we worked hard and won the competition. Then he also went on a funded trip to Oxford University for Model United Nations, in which he learned many different experiences about competitive debating. He also went to an exchange program at Aarhus University in Denmark, and he learned VR technologies as a summer semester course.

The Bridging Gap Between Studies and World

Ali chose Leadership and Organizational behavior in Ph.D. to allow him to hone his skills towards participation, he worked under many different internships provided by HIT and learned the organizational systems that the companies held, His work under his current professor, Dr. Zhang Li, gave him a very good understanding of the regulations in China and bridging gaps of companies to an international clientele. This gave him a very strong foundation to work with, building his skills and understanding to write his dissertation. “Leadership is something that I look upon, and always try to understand, as this is where we begin our journey to shape a better world with better organization and leaders.”

Ali looks forward to gaining this priceless experience of education and mentorship, and apply his knowledge to create better opportunities between China and Pakistan. During his Master’s graduation, he was fortunate to be a speaker at the “Graduation Ceremony” of HIT, which was broadcasted live.
