Program Cultivation Objective:

The Department of Geology of Northwest University, founded in 1939, is one of the earliest comprehensive university geology departments with long history in China. In 2007, geology discipline of NWU was selected as the national key first class discipline, and it is enlisted as one of the first leading disciplines under the national “Double First Class” Initiative in 2017. Its center for Post-doctoral Studies is awarded as the “National Excellent Center for Post-doctoral Studies” which is the only prize wining center in geology discipline in China. This program is dedicated to train talents with concrete and systematic knowledge in the field of mineralogy, petrology and mineral deposit. The students are required to master strong capability of conducting scientific research in this field, understand the current and future development trend of geology discipline, acquire ability to utilize computer and network, have ability to carry out teaching, research and solve actual problems independently.   

Cultivation Requirements:

1. Curriculum Requirements: The PhD courses consists of three semesters. The PhD course requires 20 total credits, including degree program 12 credits and public course 8 credits.

2. Paper Requirements:

a. Opening report of the degree dissertation will be carried out at the end of the second semester or in the third semester. It will take nearly 2 years to finish the final paper. 

b. In general, the topic selection should be based on the related program or research field. The topic is ought to be of theoretical significance and application value. Besides, the topic is supposed to be innovative, systematic and try to combine the research field of the student’s Ph.D supervisor.

c. The format of opening report and dissertation should follow The Standard of Academic Dissertation for Postgraduates’ of Northwest University and The Supplemental Regulations of the Standard of Academic Dissertation for Postgraduates’ of Northwest University.

d. According to Rules of International Postgraduates’ Cultivation Regulation  of Northwest University, the PhD students should publish at least one scientific paper in NWU recognized core and above journals related to their research field. The PhD degree dissertation is required to write in English with Chinese abstract and the dissertation will be defended in English.

Main Courses:

Application Requirements:

1. Be in good health and well-conduct;

2. Non-Chinese citizens;

3. Less than 40 years old;

4. Hold a relevant master degree;

5. At least TOEFL IBT 60 or IELTS 5.5.  

Application Documents:

1. Copy of valid passport photo page and 2 passport-sized photos;

2. Copy of highest diploma (Prospective diploma recipients must submit official document issued by your current school to prove your current student status or expected graduation date);

3. Copy of master transcript;

4. Two recommendation letters in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors;

5. A Study Plan or Research Proposal in Chinese or English with a minimum of 800 words;

6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form;

7. The copy of TOEFL or IELTS transcript (Except applicants from native English countries).

Note: Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations. No application documents will be returned.
