History and Culture
Shenyang is a famous historical and cultural city with more than 2,600 years of history. Located to the north of Hun River, the city has bred the ancient culture of the Liao River basin, one of the birthplaces of the Chinese civilization. There are three UNESCO World Heritage sites in Shenyang: the city’s Qing-era Imperial Palace complex and two tomb complexes of earlier rulers of Qing dynasty, namely Zhao Tomb and Fu Tomb. Notable among Shenyang’s many museums is the Liaoning Province Museum. The city is also noted for its many parks and lush greenery such as the Shenyang World Horticulture Exposition Garden where was held the International Horticultural Exposition in 2006. In addition, Shenyang played host to several of the preliminary football matches during the 2008 Olympic Games.
